Starlight Networks Brings Multimedia to 100BaseT Networks -- Joins Fast Ethernet Alliance

Mountain View, Calif., July 18, 1995 -- Starlight Networks announced today its support for the 100BaseT Fast Ethernet standard and its ability to deliver multimedia over 100BaseT networks with its StarWorks(r) and StarWare(r) multimedia networking software solutions. Starlight has joined the Fast Ethernet Alliance as an observing member. "Not only is 100BaseT Fast Ethernet the most practical solution for upgrading 10BaseT networks, but is also effective for high bandwidth multimedia applications including video-on-demand,"said Jack Moses, chairman of the Fast Ethernet Alliance. "We are pleased that Starlight Networks has joined the Fast Ethernet Alliance and is committed to supporting 100BaseT for multimedia networking." "As the market leader in open systems solutions for multimedia networking, Starlight Networks is in a position to support the high bandwidth graphics and video demands of 100BaseT users. 100BaseT offers a viable platform for multimedia networks and an easy migration from 10BaseT. We expect that many Fast Ethernet users will be adding multimedia applications to their network," said Jim Long, President, Starlight Networks. Starlight currently supports 100BaseT Fast Ethernet hubs and routers from Grand Junction, Bay Networks, 3-Com Corporation, Lannet, Alantec, and others.

The Fast Ethernet Alliance is a multivendor group supporting 100 megabit-per- second (Mbps) CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) Ethernet technology. 100BaseT was recently approved as an official standard of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and is the high speed successor to 10BaseT, another IEEE 802.3 standard, the world's most popular LAN technology with over 60 million nodes installed. The Fast Ethernet Alliance now numbers over 75 member companies.
